Coming into the 2007 season there are two coaching needs Notre Dame needed to address, they need a solid defensive coordinator to fix that awful defense and they need someone to mentor highly ranked prep star Jimmy Clausen. Notre Dame hopes to solve these issues with a couple of hirings expected to be announced today.
First, Corwin Brown will be introduced as
Notre Dame's defensive coordinator. Brown was the NY Jets defensive backs coach for the past three seasons. The Chi-town native played for the Patriots for 3 seasons and the Jets for 2 seasons - where Coach Weiss was an assistant. Brown will have a challenge ahead of him as Notre Dame finished 65th in total defense in 2006, his main challenge will be to make something of a secondary that was prone to giving up big plays.
Secondly, former Notre Dame quarterback Ron Powlus will be named the new quarterback coach. Powlus spent 4 years leading the Irish but was viewed as a disappointment considering the hype he had coming in. Powlus will be charged with mentoring the most highly touted prep star since Powlus - Jimmy Clausen.
